Introduction to Solar vehicle
The evolution of travelling has improved over the past decades. Earlier we used to have horse carriage making it first step towards travelling. The invention of the engine (IC Engine) in cars have marked as a breakthrough for humans, but now there is a need for some other invention. With newly spark in the automobile industry is the use of renewable energy, primarily electric and solar. In just next couple of years, the electric vehicle will hit the road. Electric Vehicles (EV) could potentially be cheaper and effective than traditional cars. The potential technology to challenge EV is none other than Solar Vehicle.
A solar vehicle can be defined as an electric car which is completely or significantly powered by solar energy through photovoltaic cells. The term “Solar Vehicle” is described as solar energy powers most f vehicle’s component propulsion and in some cases, even communication devices are powered by it. In 1955, the first-ever solar car model was displayed by General Motor employee William G Cobb. at Chicago. The model was only 15 inch in size.
The design of solar cars is limited to its energy capacity. They were used only for solar car races until 2011 they were designed for commercial use. Solar cars are always fitted with a gauge as seen with traditional cars; it Is for to provide a smooth driving experience. The driver must check at gauge indicator at regular intervals for any potential errors. PVC (photovoltaic cells) are responsible for converting solar energy into electrical energy. PVC is made of semiconductor materials silicon, indium and gallium, out of it silicon are the most common with an efficiency rate of 15to 20%.
A solar cell gets the energy to move from sunlight. There is some black panel attacked at the back of the car; its purpose is to absorb sunlight. By the simple science law, we know, black absorbs more sunlight. The energy conversion from sunlight to electrical is done by solar cells. The black panel consists of many such multiple solar cells which generate electricity and passes to the motor to move and run the vehicle. The excess energy generated is stored in the battery for the cloudy atmosphere or in the absence of sunlight. If a car is 20 feet in length and 6 feet wide, to perfectly run the vehicle, the engine would require a power of 10 horsepower. But with the best of solar cells present, we could only convert around 20 to 24% of sunlight, providing only 2 horsepower to the engine. Thus, to perfectly runs the car, we use a solar array, solar car brakes, batteries and motor and controller.
In today’s world global warming is increasing day by day because of rising pollution levels, deforestation, and the release of CFC in atmosphere and others. The need of the hour is to switch to clean and energy. This can be only achieved by development in the renewable sector and more awareness of its clean energy, among others. Electrical and solar cars should be promoted to see a significant change in the ecosystem.
